Acorn Stair Lift Installation

Acorn handles its own stair lift installation. The company sells straight to homeowners and dispatches its own surveyors and engineers rather than working through local dealers. On-site fitting normally runs 1 to 2 hours, and Acorn says installation can often happen within days, or even the following day in certain areas.

Finding Acorn Stairlifts Near You

Acorn's US head office in Florida supports its own surveyors and engineers working nationwide. So there are no local Acorn dealerships you can walk into. Your survey, your fitting and any future repairs are all done by Acorn employees.

The installers shown on this site are drawn from the public dealer lists for Bruno and Harmar. Altogether 967 installers appear, spread over 50 states, and 636 of them mention repairs and servicing. Those companies supply and install Bruno and Harmar lifts rather than Acorn ones. A ZIP code search lists installers whose office sits within 40 miles, closest first, and the radius grows to 80 miles when fewer than 3 come up. Some families like to weigh a quote from one of these installers against an Acorn quote.

Acorn Installation, Step by Step

  1. Survey at home

An Acorn surveyor measures your stairs, checks for a power outlet near the top or bottom, and gives you a written price.

  2. Order

From order to fitting day: a few days (sometimes the next day).

  3. Fitting day

1 to 2 hours on site (complex stairs 4 to 5 hours), and the lift works before the fitter leaves.

  4. Handover and repairs

The fitter shows you the controls and safety stops. For repairs and servicing, call Acorn's own engineers.

The Acorn Stair Lift Installation Process, Step by Step

Acorn outlines the same brief process for most homes.

  1. A surveyor comes out to measure the stairs. Acorn provides this home survey for free. Those measurements determine which rail and model will work.
  2. Acorn schedules the fitting. That is often only a few days away, and occasionally the very next day.
  3. An engineer installs the rail and chair. The rail is bolted to the staircase itself rather than the wall, so no drilling into your walls.

The FastTrack rail from Acorn is modular. It shows up in ready-made sections that get joined together inside your home rather than being built to order at a factory. Acorn says this is what allows it to be put together in your home within a few hours.

How Much Time Does Acorn Chair Lift Installation Take?

According to Acorn, fitting a chair lift usually takes 1 to 2 hours. Complex stairs can stretch that to 4 to 5 hours. Looking across all brands, you can expect 2 to 4 hours on site for a straight model and 4 to 5 hours where the stairs curve.

How long you wait for fitting also comes down to the stairs. Across brands, a straight lift generally goes in somewhere from 1 to 15 days after the order is placed. A curved lift generally needs roughly 3 to 5 weeks.

For straight stairs, the Acorn 130 is the main model. Indoors it works on a staircase slope of 29 to 55 degrees using the standard seat post. Incline just means the steepness of the staircase. The Acorn 130 has been tested to the ASME A18.1 and A17.5 standards, the US safety standards covering stair lifts and their electrical components.

Acorn Stairlift Repair and Servicing

Repairs on Acorn lifts are done by Acorn. The company keeps its own service technicians working throughout the US and suggests a service every 12 months.

Each new lift carries a 12-month manufacturer's warranty starting from installation day. It pays for the callout, parts and labor, with Acorn's own engineers doing the work. The motor and gearbox get a lifetime warranty too, though only while the lift receives an Acorn service each year. Once the first year ends, you can buy an extended warranty to keep callouts, parts and labor covered.

Installed Cost by Stair Type

This page does not list Acorn's own pricing. What you see below are ballpark installed costs for brand-new stairlifts from any manufacturer. Each range comes from at least three separate sources, such as price guides, manufacturers or dealers, and none of them is a quote.

Type of stairsTypical installed cost
Indoor straight$2,500 to $7,500
Indoor curved$9,000 to $15,000
Two straight flights with a landing between$9,000 to $15,000
Straight (outdoor)$4,000 to $10,500
Curved (outdoor)$10,000 to $20,500

The usual straight rail measures 15.5 ft. Longer stairs generally cost roughly $80 to $100 more for each extra foot of rail.

Questions People Often Ask

Which is the better stairlift, Acorn or Bruno?

The main difference lies in the way each company sells its lifts. Acorn supplies, installs and services its own products. Bruno goes through local dealers instead, and 686 of the installers listed on this site carry Bruno. Asking each for a written quote on the same stairs lets you compare price and warranty directly.

Does Acorn repurchase a stairlift you no longer need?

No. Acorn states that it does not buy back stairlifts.

Can a used or online stairlift be fitted instead?

Some independent installers will install a second-hand or internet-purchased straight lift. Fitting alone typically runs $550 to $850.

Is Acorn a stairlift specialist?

Yes. Acorn began in 1992 and makes and fits nothing but stairlifts.
