Handicare Stair Lift Installation

Handicare stair lift installation has to be done by a local dealer the manufacturer has approved, and a new lift on straight stairs usually costs $2,500 to $7,500 installed. Handicare now belongs to Savaria, a company headquartered in Laval, Québec. Savaria finalised its acquisition of Handicare Group AB on 4 March 2021. Handicare's US site says it is part of Savaria, and Savaria sells the Handicare 1100 through its local dealers, so a Savaria dealer is the one to call.

Who Can Fit a Handicare Lift?

A dealer becomes authorized when the manufacturer approves that local firm to sell, install and maintain its lifts. The Handicare 1100 manual says installation and servicing should only be done by manufacturer-authorized dealers or engineers. Savaria supplies the Handicare 1100 via local Savaria dealers, and that dealer also administers the 24-month parts warranty.

A straight staircase is the quickest job. A curved staircase, or one where a landing separates two straight flights, costs more and takes more time.

Handicare Installation, Step by Step

  1. Survey at home

A Savaria or Handicare dealer measures your stairs, checks for a power outlet near the top or bottom, and gives you a written price.

  2. Order

From order to fitting day: 1 to 15 days (straight; curved 3 to 5 weeks).

  3. Fitting day

2 to 4 hours on site (straight; curved 4 to 5 hours), and the lift works before the fitter leaves.

  4. Handover and repairs

The fitter shows you the controls and safety stops. For repairs and servicing, call the dealer who fitted it.

Installed Prices for Each Staircase Type

The prices below cover having a new lift installed in your home. Each range runs from the typical low to the typical high price stated by three or more independent guides, manufacturers or dealers, so treat it as a guide rather than a quote.

StairsNew lift, fitted price
Indoor straight$2,500 to $7,500
Indoor curved$9,000 to $15,000
Straight flights with a landing between$9,000 to $15,000
Outdoor straight$4,000 to $10,500
Outdoor curved$10,000 to $20,500

The standard straight rail measures 15.5 ft. When your stairs call for more rail than that, each additional foot costs roughly $80 to $100.

If you already own a straight lift, bought second hand or online, it can sometimes be installed on its own. This is known as an install-only job: the fitter installs a lift you provide: which generally runs $550 to $850 on straight stairs.

Waiting Times and Installation Day

Most straight lifts go in within 1 to 15 days after ordering. A curved lift needs about 3 to 5 weeks, around 18 to 38 days.

On installation day, expect 2 to 4 hours for a straight lift. A curved lift needs 4 to 5 hours.

Will a Handicare 1100 Work on Your Stairs?

The Handicare 1100 is designed for straight indoor staircases. Incline means the steepness of your stairs in degrees, and the 1100 handles inclines from 30 to 50 degrees.

Steeper stairs reduce what the lift can carry. Past 46 degrees, the weight limit falls to 287 lb, so the dealer checks both the slope of your staircase and the user's weight.

Power comes from a 24-volt battery that recharges through a regular household socket.

Warranty and Annual Service

Savaria's warranty on the 1100 depends on regular maintenance, so missed servicing can put a claim at risk. The manual calls for servicing at least once a year, performed by an authorized dealer or engineer.

Which Handicare Models Are Sold in the US?

Savaria's American stairlift lineup covers these lifts:

  • Straight staircases: K2, K2+, plus the Handicare 1000 and 1100
  • Curved staircases: the Stairfriend 23, Handicare 4000, and Freecurve

Locating an Installer Near You

Our directory covers 967 stairlift installers in all 50 states, and 636 of those also list repairs and service. The listings come from Bruno's and Harmar's public dealer locators, refreshed every three months. Because of this, a Handicare dealer might not show up under that brand, so it pays to ask any installer whether they install or maintain Handicare lifts.

A ZIP search brings up installers whose office sits within 40 miles, nearest first. If fewer than 3 come up, it widens to 80 miles. The site itself doesn't sell, fit or repair lifts, and installers can pay for customer introductions. To get a quote, call us or use the quote form, which sends your details to up to three installers.

Common Questions

What does installing a stairlift cost on average?

What you pay depends much more on the shape of your staircase than on the brand. Outdoor models cost more than indoor versions of the same shape. An outdoor straight lift, for instance, costs $4,000 to $10,500 installed, while the indoor equivalent is $2,500 to $7,500.

Will a dealer fit a second-hand Handicare lift?

Installers often fit a straight lift you already own for $550 to $850. Given that the manufacturer expects an authorized dealer to handle the work, it makes sense to check whether the installer is approved for Handicare.
