Stair Lift Repair and Service

If your stair lift is beeping, stuck partway or won't move, stair lift repair often starts with a simple one-minute check. Still stuck? Call us and we'll pass your details to local installers who handle repairs in your ZIP code. We connect you with installers; we do not repair lifts ourselves. Most often it comes down to the batteries, the key switch, a seat left turned, or something lying on the track. A few of these take only a minute to look at. The rest call for a technician.

Simple Checks Before You Call a Technician

A beep most often points to batteries that are not taking a charge, according to Stannah. Charging happens while the lift sits in its proper parked place, so a quick once-over is worth doing before you book anyone. Each check is fast and might spare you a call-out.

  1. Confirm the noise is coming from the lift itself. A smoke or carbon monoxide alarm can make a near-identical sound, as Lifeway notes.
  2. See that the lift is sitting properly at the top or bottom of the staircase, since that is the spot where it charges (Stannah).
  3. Look at the key switch. This is the little key on the unit that switches power on and off, and it has to be in place and turned on.
  4. Check that the swivel seat is back in its travel position; a turned seat can prevent the lift from moving.
  5. Scan the rail for anything lying across it, and make sure the power cord is firmly plugged in (101 Mobility).

Safety edges are the padded strips on the footrest and carriage that halt the lift the moment they meet something. A loose shoe, a shopping bag or a pet on the stairs can trigger them. If a Harmar SL300 won't move, its manual says to check the seat swivel and footrest sensors.

Certain models put a fault code on a small screen. On the Stannah 600, code 3 flags an obstruction at the footrest or carriage, while code 4 flags the power key or the on-off switch. For the Acorn 130, code C5 shows the charger is plugged in but the battery isn't taking a charge, a battery problem that needs a service call.

When the beeping or the jam continues after you run through these, it is time for a technician.

Stair Lift Repair Costs

These are the standard ranges published by RetirementLiving. Before booking, ask what the price includes: the call-out, diagnosis, parts and labor.

Stannah's guidance puts battery life at 3 to 5 years, while Bruno says it varies a great deal and can stretch to ten years. Stannah advises against swapping the batteries on your own and recommends having a technician do it.

A Yearly Stair Lift Service

An annual service is what most manufacturers recommend, says Bruno. The technician checks the batteries, the rollers and the gear rack, the toothed strip along the rail that the lift climbs.

Acorn asks for a service once a year. The Handicare 1100 manual says the lift needs servicing no less than once a year, and twice yearly if more than one person rides it. Harmar recommends a yearly visit without making it a requirement.

Certain warranties hinge on that annual appointment, so skipping one can prove pricier down the road.

Who Can Repair Your Lift?

Harmar names the installing dealer as the first contact, but many independent repairers work on lifts they didn't sell, with no contract needed, though some brands restrict who can service their lifts. Many repairers work on lifts they didn't install, and 636 installers in our directory list repairs and service. Call us and we'll pass your details to the ones who cover your ZIP code.

With 636 installers who list repairs and service across all 50 states, there's very likely one near you.

Where a state asks for a permit, dealers can refuse jobs on a lift that never got certified, according to Arrow Lift.

Stair Lift Repair Near Me: Finding a Technician

The ZIP search brings up installers with an office within 40 miles, closest first, and stretches to 80 miles if fewer than 3 turn up. Bruno dealers listing your area come next. The quote form sends your details to up to three installers. Installers may pay us for introductions.

Our listings are built from Bruno's and Harmar's public dealer locators and refreshed every three months. Of those listed, 686 stock Bruno, 450 stock Harmar and 169 stock both.

Who Takes Care of Acorn Stairlift Repair?

Work on Acorn lifts is carried out by Acorn's own engineers, and the company keeps its own US service technicians on staff. Acorn provides a 12-month warranty starting from installation. The lifetime cover on the motor and gearbox only holds if an annual Acorn service is kept up.

After that cover runs out, independent repairers who work across all major brands offer another path. Acorn does not buy back stairlifts, so repairing is generally how an Acorn lift stays in use. Call us and we'll pass your details to installers who serve your ZIP code.

Bruno Stairlift Repair and Warranty

Bruno gives indoor lifts a limited lifetime warranty, with 5 years on outdoor models. Keeping that warranty valid requires the lift to have been fitted by a Bruno dealer. Outdoor Bruno units are serviced solely by factory-trained Bruno dealers.

Our list includes 686 installers who carry Bruno, and a call to us passes your details to those who serve your ZIP code.

Common Questions

Who can repair Handicare stairlifts?

The Handicare 1100 manual says only dealers or engineers the manufacturer has authorized should service it. The unit carries a 24-month parts warranty via the dealer. Some dealers covering several brands keep parts on hand for Bruno, Harmar, Handicare and Prism.

How much is a stairlift service?

A yearly service visit on its own generally runs $150 to $300, according to RetirementLiving. That sits apart from any repair uncovered during the appointment.

Does warranty cover a Harmar repair?

The Harmar SL600 carries a decade on the gear rack, one year on the battery and lifetime cover on the motor. The SL300 carries two years on parts, a decade on the gear rack and one year on the battery.

Is a second-hand lift covered by Stannah's warranty?

Usually not. Stannah's lifetime cover on the carriage motor and gearbox applies only to new lifts bought directly from Stannah, so a second-hand lift is generally outside it. That doesn't mean it can't be fixed. Call us and we'll pass your details to local installers who handle repairs.
