|---|---|---|---|

| Curved staircase | 4 to 5 hours | 3 to 5 weeks | $135 to $193 a foot past 20 ft |
A curved rail is built for one staircase, so a used curved lift is rarely refitted to another.

What You Pay For: Survey, Order, Fitting
Often free: a survey at home
The installer measures your stairs, looks for a power outlet close to the top or bottom, then gives you a price in writing.
Ordering the lift
Straight rails are cut from stock, so fitting usually happens 1 to 15 days later. Allow 3 to 5 weeks for a curved rail made for your staircase.
The day of fitting
A straight lift takes about 2 to 4 hours and a curved one 4 to 5 hours, and the fitter stays until the lift is working.
Servicing and handover
The fitter walks you through the controls and safety stops. For repairs and yearly servicing, call the dealer who fitted your lift.
How These Price Ranges Are Built
Each range draws on at least three independent price guides, manufacturers or dealers: the low end is the middle of the lows they publish, and the high end the middle of their highs. These ranges summarize published prices, not records of what buyers paid, so use them as a guide rather than a quote for your stairs.
Looking at every type together, the National Council on Aging gives a typical installed figure of $2,500 to $12,000.
Fitting a Lift You Already Have
If you bought a straight lift second-hand or online, expect to pay an installer $550 to $850 to fit it. A curved lift is different: its rail was made for one staircase, so it needs a survey and a separate quote, and it rarely fits another home.
When you buy a new lift from a dealer, fitting is usually part of the price. ConsumerAffairs puts the fitting share at roughly 15% to 35% of the total.
Stairlift Installation by Brand
Curved Stairs and Landings
If your stairs curve or turn at a landing, expect to pay much more: installed, a curved lift runs $9,000 to $15,000, against $2,500 to $7,500 for one straight flight. The rail has to be made to fit your stairs, and fitting it takes longer, as the National Council on Aging explains.
Within that curved range, a longer or more involved rail can add $1,000 to $5,000, says Angi.
Outdoor Stairs
Lifts for outside are made to cope with rain and weather. Outdoor lifts typically cost $2,000 to $3,500 more than indoor lifts, according to Lifeway Mobility.
Extras That Can Add to the Bill
The lift runs on household power, so the bill grows when no outlet sits near the stairs or the fixing surface needs extra work. Outlet and circuit prices are from HomeGuide; the removal and concrete figures are one dealer's list prices, from The Albany Lift Company.
| Extra | Cost |
|---|---|
| New outlet near the stairs, fitted by an electrician | $150 to $350 |
| Dedicated circuit from the electrical panel | $250 to $900 |
| Removing an old lift | $150, one dealer's price |
| Fixing the rail to concrete or tile | $195, one dealer's price |
| Building permit | Depends on the state and town |
Used and Rented Lifts
A used lift or a rental can cost less up front, but a rental adds a deposit, a minimum term and a fee to fit and remove it. Figures from HomeGuide and Fixr.
| Option | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Used straight lift, installed | $2,000 to $3,000 or more (Fixr: $1,500 to $2,500) |
| Rent, per month | $150 to $500, usually for 3 months or more |
| Rental deposit | $500 to $1,000 |
| Fitting and later removing a rented lift | $800 to $1,200 |
Help Paying for a Stair Lift
A number of states operate Medicaid waiver programs. These state programs support people in receiving care at home rather than moving into a care facility, and some pay for stairlifts as a home modification. Coverage varies from state to state.
The VA's HISA home modification benefit pays up to $6,800 over a lifetime for a service-connected disability (or a rating of 50% or more) and $2,000 for other disabilities, but it excludes removable equipment such as stair glides, so it is unlikely to help with a stair lift.
Next: what happens on installation day, used and online lifts, lifts that need no installation and stair lift repair.
A survey turns these ranges into a price for your stairs. Call and we pass your request to installers near you.
Call (888) 314-9397Questions People Ask
Will Medicare cover a stair lift?
No. In its medical equipment listings, Medicare declines to cover stairway elevators, a category that includes stair lifts. It classes them as convenience items rather than primarily medical ones.
Is a bigger VA grant available for home changes?
Yes. The VA has two bigger housing grants for certain veterans with disabilities. For fiscal year 2026, the maximum Specially Adapted Housing grant is $126,526, and the maximum Special Home Adaptation grant is $25,350.
Does a stair lift quote include sales tax?
Generally no. Quotes from dealers typically include installation, with sales tax appearing separately on the invoice. In Illinois, stair lifts are not eligible for the lower 1% medical-equipment rate, so the general sales tax rate applies.
What are the running costs once a stair lift is in?
An annual service visit normally costs $100 to $300. Once you no longer need the lift, removal runs about $100 to $300.
