Stair Lift Fitting: How It Goes

  1. Often free: a survey at home

The installer measures your stairs, looks for a power outlet close to the top or bottom, then gives you a price in writing.

  2. Ordering the lift

Straight rails are cut from stock, so fitting usually happens 1 to 15 days later. Allow 3 to 5 weeks for a curved rail made for your staircase.

  3. The day of fitting

A straight lift takes about 2 to 4 hours and a curved one 4 to 5 hours, and the fitter stays until the lift is working.

  4. Servicing and handover

The fitter walks you through the controls and safety stops. For repairs and yearly servicing, call the dealer who fitted your lift.

Who Fits and Repairs Each Brand

Who fits and repairs a stair lift depends on the brand. Bruno and Harmar sell through local dealers, and those dealers are the installers in our list; 169 of them carry both brands, so one visit can give you a choice.

How to Choose the Best Stairlift Company Near You

Get quotes from two or three local installers, then ask each one:

  • Are your fitters trained by the manufacturer, or do you send subcontractors?
  • What does the installation warranty cover, and for how long?
  • How soon after the survey can you fit the lift?
  • What does a service call cost, and how fast do you come out for a repair?
  • Does the quote include delivery, fitting and any permit?

A cheap quote can leave out freight, fitting, permits or servicing, so compare what each price includes. Questions based on advice from 101 Mobility and Harmar.

Stair lifts in the US are built and fitted to the ASME A18.1 safety standard. Permit and inspection rules vary by state and town: Georgia requires home chairlifts to be fitted and checked to ASME A18.1, and Connecticut licenses the technicians who fit them.

Fill in our quote form and your details go to as many as three installers, so you can set their quotes side by side.

Finding Installers in Your Area

Type in your ZIP code and you'll see installers with an office within 40 miles of you, nearest first. If there are fewer than three that close, we widen the search to 80 miles so you still have a choice. Bruno dealers listing your area show up after those. On city pages you will see installers whose offices are no more than 40 miles from the city center, along with Bruno dealers covering that city's ZIP code.

We build our listings from the public dealer locators run by Bruno and Harmar, updating them every three months. We do not sell, install or repair lifts, and installers may pay us a referral fee.

Not sure which installer to pick? Call and we pass your stairs to the ones who cover your ZIP code.

Questions People Ask

How much does a stair lift cost with installation?

About $2,500 to $7,500 for one straight flight and $9,000 to $15,000 for curved stairs, fitted. The stairlift cost page has every stair type.

How long does it take to install a stair lift?

A straight lift takes 2 to 4 hours on the day. A curved rail is made to fit your stairs, so expect 3 to 5 weeks before a fitting day of 4 to 5 hours.

Will Medicare pay for a stair lift?

No. Medicare lists stairway elevators among the equipment it does not cover. Some state Medicaid waiver programs do pay for one as a home change; see help paying for a stair lift.

What does a Bruno Diamond dealer mean?

It is a sales tier, not a rating of service. One Diamond dealer says Diamond dealers are those in the top 3% of Bruno sales.

Who fits a stair lift I bought used or online?

Many dealers fit a lift you already own, for about $550 to $850 on a straight rail. A curved rail rarely fits another staircase. See used and online stair lifts.
